Mentally, neck pain can be much worse triggering anxiety, depression and sleep disturbances.

Causes of Neck pain

The causes of neck pain vary greatly from person to person. This is why neck pain should never ever be ignored. Some of the more common causes of neck pain include:

Poor posture: This is a common cause of neck pain, especially in people who spend long hours sitting at a desk or looking at a computer screen.

Muscle strain or injury: This can occur from activities such as sports or lifting heavy objects.

Muscle strain or injury: This can occur from activities such as sports or lifting heavy objects.

Osteoarthritis: This is a type of arthritis that can affect the joints in the neck and cause pain.

Herniated or bulging discs: These can put pressure on the nerves in the neck and cause pain.

Pinched nerves: This can occur when a nerve in the neck is compressed, leading to pain and other symptoms.

Whiplash: This is a type of injury that can occur from a sudden jolt to the neck, such as in a car accident.

Degeneration: This is a condition where the discs in the neck begin to break down and cause pain.

Spinal stenosis: This is a condition where the spinal canal narrows, putting pressure on the nerves in the neck.

Fibromyalgia: This is a condition that can cause widespread pain, including in the neck.

Postural Fatigue: This can come from poor fat metabolism and chronic inflammation as a result of imbalances in your physiology.

Autonomic Nervous System Changes: Changes in flight or fight responses can create a fatigue-like neck pain often to referred to as a coat-hanger syndrome. This is common in those who have been under prolonged stress, have sleeping difficulties or chronic fatigue issues.

How does posture cause neck problems? There are many postures that we maintain in the course of a day. By enlarge, many of our posture problems throughout the day are derived from fatigue. This can be the result of dietary habits, energy production problems or neurological/brain problems. Sleeping postures are more often a bigger problem that we are sometimes unaware of. Strains from a lack pillow support, irritation to shoulder and the neck directly or sprains and strains can all happen from poor sleeping postures. Here’s a few examples of causes of sleeping position for neck pain we often see:

Sleeping on your stomach: Sleeping on your stomach can cause your neck to twist and turn unnaturally putting strain on your neck muscles and joints. Also, when sleeping on your stomach, you might need to turn your head to the side to breathe properly, which can also lead to neck pain.

Sleeping on your back with a high pillow: Sleeping on your back with a high pillow can cause your neck to be in a forward-flexed position for an extended period, which can cause strain on the neck muscles and joints.

Sleeping on your side with an unsupported neck: When sleeping on your side, if your neck is unsupported, it can cause your neck to bend unnaturally, leading to strain on the neck muscles and joints, a common issue with poor pillow choices.
