Neck Pain Treatment Yarraville

Neck Pain Yarraville

Whether you’ve just woken up with a sore neck or you’ve been suffering for months on end, you’ve probably begun to understand just how debilitating neck pain can be. Clouded concentration, radiating pain that turns into headaches, restless nights, restricted movement and frustration, neck pain often takes over you!

You’re in the right place!

Causes of Neck Pain

There are many causes for neck pain. A lack of support from a pillow over-night may cause neck pain after sleeping, sitting with your head turned or perhaps direct physical trauma.

In some people the cause is more subtle and may be from a specific muscle or neurological imbalance, spinal joint dysfunction, postural fatigue patterns, inflammation, immune changes, foot pronation and perhaps even degeneration.

For most people, neck pain has a multifactorial cause. Muscle dysfunction of the neck extensors and levator scapulae muscles are amongst the primary causes of neck pain we see. These muscles support the back of your neck and prevent your head from falling forward in addition to supporting your shoulders.

When they become dysfunctional they need to work harder to hold your head up often resulting in a build up of waste products from metabolism resulting in a general ache and stiffness feeling throughout the neck. We commonly see the levator scapulae muscle damaged by poor support when sleeping.

Should I find a better sleeping position for neck pain?

For many the simple answer is yes, but just simply changing your sleeping position may not be the long term solution you’re looking for. Understanding the interaction between these muscles and achieving balance is often a requirement prior to looking at strategies for prevention.

Other Causes of Neck pain

Probably the most missed cause of neck pain we see, especially in those with chronic neck pain, is neurological. When specific nerves have been stimulated due to chronic low levels of dysfunction elsewhere in the body, some muscle can often tighten up resulting in what is often described as ‘one sided neck stiffness’.

This is a condition we often see in migraine and headache sufferers, those with glare, smell or sound sensitivity, jaw problems or face pain. In some occasions we can also see this in those suffering with dizziness and vertigo as well.
