Is your neck always stiff and sore? Have you spent thousands of dollars on treatment but only received short term relief? Does neck pain constantly frustrate you?
“Neck pain is the fourth leading cause of disability”
Put your hand up if you have neck pain right now! That’s a lot of people. Now put your hand up if you’ve ever had neck pain! That’s pretty much everybody. Yes, neck pain at some stage afflicts everyone. But why does it stay with you…?
For some neck pain is only occasional, for others it’s a constant battle with only bouts of relief. In fact, neck pain is one of the most common things we see and many of these people often have other problems as well!
It’s interesting that there’s two types of people I see with neck pain:
- Those that put up with neck pain and just think it is normal.
- Those who will only get help with neck pain when it is really bad. When the impact on their day to day living becomes so significant it now impacts their quality of life, their ability to play with the kids or their ability to work.
For many, a couple of sessions resolves their neck pain. But from my experience, they represent a very small subset of neck pain sufferers. The majority sadly turn into chronic conditions. I break these sufferers into two groups.
The first group is those that suffer in silence and just accept that neck pain and reduced movement is part of getting older.
The second are those that have regular treatment which includes massage, spinal adjustments, some muscle release work, ultrasound or some other electrical device. These people get some relief with their treatment, but it always seems to be short lived.
They become exhausted with chronic pain and time consuming stretches and exercises that just don’t work.
What frustrates me is this inner belief that many have that neck pain is just about neck structure!
What I’m saying shouldn’t be a revelation. To consider that the body is connected and there are other areas in the body that could impact how the neck works.
It just frustrates me to see people who have needlessly suffered for years with pain because no one bothered to look outside of their neck for the cause of their neck problem! I’ve just seen too many practitioners over the years that are happy to repeat the same treatment over and over and hope the patient will eventually just improve.
There is no need for neck pain to persist for years and years without a solution. It shouldn’t be your constant companion.
Do you want to know the main reasons I see neck pain fail to improve despite ongoing treatment? The main reasons that are most commonly missed? The main reasons I see people suffer chronically?
Here are the 3 most commonly untreated areas that cause neck pain:
- TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) or jaw joint – Commonly alters trigeminal-cervical function creating muscular spasm and restricted movement.
- Shoulder blade instability – Often results in changes to levator scap and upper trapezius problems.
- Postural fatigue – Causes greater workload on neck muscles to hold the head up causing aching, fatigue and stiffness.
