If you’re a migraine sufferer you’ve probably already tried a variety of medications to get some relief. You might have spoken with your GP or a neurologist. And you’ve probably already lost many days in your life.
Here at Spinewise, headaches and Migraines are an area we have a special interest in. Our Expert Migraine Chiropractors are highly trained in chiropractic headache treatment, identifying the components and influences to both headaches and migraine.
Understanding there are different types of headaches caused by different problems and different types of migraine caused by different influences is important in finding the best chiropractic headaches solution for you. When it comes to migraine a one-fits-all approach is just too simplistic!
Research on the true cause of migraine is ongoing. Latest evidence is suggesting migraine is caused by changes in the trigeminovascular pathway, a neural network that connects your face, neck, brainstem and brain.
The trigeminal nerve is the nerve that supplies your face, but it also supplies many structures, including blood vessels, in your brain. When the nerve becomes irritated it can result in inflammation around the arteries of the brain resulting in changes in blood flow and an increased sensation in the area that often creates a throbbing headache.
As the trigeminal nerve is irritated, it stimulates the brain stem altering function in an area known as your midbrain resulting in an increased light and sound sensitivity. In some people this wind up results in high levels of neural stimulation increasing their general sensitivity levels and can lead to neck pain and insomnia.
Irrelevant of the mechanism, one thing that is understood is the more frequent migraines become the harder they are to work with. So early intervention may be important in helping to relieve you of your migraines.
Whilst it is not truly understood why, some women will get ‘menstrual migraines’ associated with their period, the timing of when a migraine occurs can tell us a lot about what is driving these migraines.
The two most common reasons menstrual migraines occur are changes to your reproductive hormones, oestrogen and progesterone, or changes to an inflammatory agent known as prostaglandin.
An interesting feature of migraine in children is known as abdominal migraines. These migraines are often silent, producing only abdominal discomfort or digestive issues with many having vomiting, loss of appetite and nausea as their primary symptoms. Unfortunately, our Migraine Chiropractors have all too commonly seen abdominal migraines mismanaged as digestive rather than neurological issues.
Given that many children with abdominal migraine go on to develop migraine headaches later in life, establishing strategies to minimize, or hopefully stop, these migraines early on is important.
Finding the cause of migraine can be difficult. A migraine assessment is very different to other forms of assessment and involves a detailed neurological, sensory, structural and physiological assessment taking into account the frequency, location, duration and nature of your headache. This extreme level of detail is required as there are so many different causes to migraine.
Our expert migraine chiropractor have been developing migraine protocols for over 15 years. We understand that everyone has their own neurology and their own components to irritating these pathways. In performing a thorough assessment, we can piece together a unique chiropractic headache treatment program tailored to help you achieve the best result.
By incorporating structural work to the jaw and spine, neurological rehabilitation procedures, supplementation and herbals with targeted nutrition changes in a manner specific to your presentation, we aim to minimize the stress on your trigeminovascular pathway and help you achieve the life you desire.
An integrative health approach looking at all aspects of your structure, physiology and neurology is critical in developing an individualised treatment program to helping you beat migraine.

Migraines are more than just a “bad headache.” They are a neurological condition that can involve intense, throbbing pain, often on one side of the head, and may be accompanied by nausea, visual disturbances, light or sound sensitivity, dizziness, or fatigue.
Unlike common tension headaches, migraines often reflect how the brain and nervous system are processing stress, movement and sensory input. In many cases, the brain is overstimulated, especially a pathway known as the trigeminovascular pathway. Check out my vid on how migraines occur here: https://youtu.be/R_kdOZFaZ48
With a thorough assessment of your neurology, physiology and hormone patterns, an underlying driver of migraines can be found.
Migraines rarely have a single cause. That’s why we take a whole-person approach rather than chasing symptoms alone.
Our Migraine assessment session may include:
Our goal is to understand why your nervous system may be under strain and find a solution to the dysfunction.
For many people, yes, but everyone is different. It’s rare for two people to have the same cause for their migraines. We aim to improve how the body and nervous system function together. When spinal joints, muscles, neural pathways and hormonal mechanisms are under stress, this can often place the brain on edge, just waiting for a trigger to set it off.
By restoring movement, reducing mechanical stress, supporting nervous system regulation and improving function, many patients experience:
Every person responds differently, but care is always tailored to your body and your needs.
Applied Kinesiology (AK) allows us to assess how different systems in the body — including the musculoskeletal, neurological, biochemical, and stress-response systems — are interacting.
Using gentle muscle testing, we can identify:
AK doesn’t replace our neurological, physiological, structural or hormonal testing; it adds to the context of them. This helps guide more precise, individualised care, rather than relying on guesswork or one-size-fits-all approaches.
This varies from person to person and depends on factors such as migraine history, frequency, nervous system resilience, stress levels, lifestyle factors and the root of imbalance.
Some people notice changes within a few visits, while others experience more gradual improvement over weeks to months. Our focus is on doing what we need to do to build long-term stability and resilience within your nervous system.
We’ll always discuss realistic expectations with you and track your progress.
Yes. We do not advise stopping or changing any medications unless directed by your GP or specialist. Our team are experts in Migraine care and are well aware of the various medications and injectable treatments. Our care can be safely used alongside medical management.
